Independent Verification & Validation
Independent verification and validation (IV&V) is part of Pragmatics systems engineering core competency. Our disciplined engineering approach to IV&V covers all aspects of the systems development life cycle (SDLC), from planning through disposition. As an independent IV&V assessor for our customers, we employ a bilateral approach: building the product right and building the right product.
The foundation of our IV&V service offering is our robust and proven Pro-3SM (Process, Project, and Product) IV&V methodology, which proactively provides full-service IV&V.
During process IV&V, we focus on identifying and mitigating risks early to prevent product and project issues and on achieving and ensuring adherence to documented standards and guidelines. We use best practices and provide review and audit of our customers’ current processes and then recommend improvements. We concentrate on progress and performance.
During project IV&V, we focus on independent project oversight, providing comprehensive and mature project review by looking at the project activities that keep the overall project on scope, on time and within budget.
During product IV&V, we focus on work product quality, ensuring that work products adhere to SDLC as they are produced and meet the requirements of their intended use. We also provide the traditional core activities of testing, auditing, and reporting on the status of the actual deliverables and work products.
Pro-3 incorporates a suite of standards, including SEI CMMI® Level 4, ISO 9001:2008, and IEEE to provide early indicators of project issues at lower levels of process maturity and provide a framework of continual process improvement. Tailored IEEE 1012-2004-based IV&V plans are a tool created and proactively updated to support the changing needs of each engagement. Further, we employ tools such as requirements and configuration management tools, routine inspections and spot checks, and a suite of comprehensive SDLC checklists to ensure factors such as consistency and completeness throughout the life cycle. We also conduct criticality analysis and risk assessments.
Our Pro-3 approach benefits our customers in a number of ways:
- Fosters high levels of complete customer satisfaction
- Enhances management insight into process, product, and project risk
- Increases organizational effectiveness
- Decreases rework and eliminates unnecessary costs and schedule delays
- Allows for early detection and correction of software defects, resulting in overall reduction in costs
- Supports the full life cycle processes to ensure conformance to program performance, schedule, and budget
- Provides early assessment of software and system performance, improving the software development and maintenance processes
- Promotes efficiency through initial risk assessments which identify IV&V focus areas to maximize benefits and return on investment.
